The “Big Start” is in Belfast and the second stage is also in the Northern Irish city before the race heads south towards Dublin and then transfers across to Italy. There have been questions asked over the route in Ireland as ever, as people want to be included in one of the three biggest bike races in the world. After the leg in the British Isles the race will settle into a traditional climbers event with a bunch of back-loaded races and summit finishes.
Elsewhere there was news of a system to allow the visually impaired to ride bikes, using an echolocation-type system which seems clever in terms of the technology and the ability to use it. It would clearly be mean to suggest that you would have to unable to see well to ride the bike in the picture, so I won't do that.
There was more news on a bit of a local issue, which has wider implications for trails and riding across the country. A bridleway in the Peak District hit headlines as it was “repaired” by the council in a way that many riders feel was highly inappropriate.
More information has been dug up by Vertebrate publishing which suggests that the entire £50,000 cost resulted from just one complaint about the track, which adds extra controversy to the whole affair.
