W*nkers and Apple Products

When the brains behind FMFT first sat in a pub and thought up the idea of this blog it was basically to do something like this. Since then it’s developed in various ways, as we just simply found that there weren’t enough incidents on the roads to give us fodder for a post every day. I think you’ll agree that Dawn Foster’s website does it better than we ever could have, and tells it straighter than we ever have. We’ve put it on the right hand side there with all the other blogs and things we like, so you too can follow her wankers. Let’s hope she doesn’t stop when she gets to 101.

In possibly related news (not that we’re implying much about obsessive Apple consumers) there have suddenly been reports everywhere of a possible Apple iThings link-up to create a comprehensive bike computer. This is all based on a patent that Apple hold for such a device, and would offer to link up all your bike electronics, including heart-rate monitors , to give a picture of any ride with any number of parameters. When combined with the technology already in the iPhone this could surely include GPS and mapping as well as communications and other phone-type stuff. All of this is here in far more detail than I have any wish to go into. I guess for iPhone users it might be nice to have an application that links everything up, rather than relying on various apps to keep your information coming.

I have to say I still think that bike computers take some of the fun out of a ride, there should be something about just enjoying the feeling of being on two wheels and reacting to what’s underneath them without obsessing about speed, cadence, your heart-rate or whatever else. I guess for some people that is all part of the fun, and any new gadget that can give them more will be welcomed. In the end perhaps we’ll have people riding to work and being monitored as closely as a Formula 1 car.
