It’s been a little while since we gave you the chance to plough through the anti-bike feelings of Daily Mail readers. Luckily for you another opportunity has come up with the cutting edge journalism that has caught Channel 4 news-reader John Snow committing a number of offences on his ride home form work.
In terms of the article it is clear that he did make some errors on his journey and perhaps jumped red lights, and the Mail has failed to mention the biggest problem – not having lights while cycling in the dark. However it does appear that some of the claimed offences are not as clear cut. While riding on the pavement he is clearly moving from and to a place to lock up his bike, which surely equates to driving a car across a pavement to reach a drive-way or car park? As much of the writing on the internet has pointed out it is also not illegal to ride while using a mobile phone at the moment.
Either way, and the debate still trudges on, he probably should be careful and obey the rules of the road, as we’ve discussed before, not least in order not to give all cyclists a bad name in the eyes of motorists. By sticking to the rules we are surely more likely to win the respect of other road users and hopefully more of the protection that can make cycling on a city’s streets safer for everyone.
Talking of every one cycling, and as we touched on yesterday, the bike hire scheme is now available to register for membership allowing more regular use of the bikes without having to use the terminals each time. Have a look and join Mr Snow on the streets of London.
Talking of things Snow, it can’t be long before the weather turns on us again and your bike will need something to keep it warm. Here is the solution.
