Katy Perry Rides a Bike (and other news)

Yesterday saw loads of terribly exciting events to celebrate it being two years until the Olympics come to London. In amongst the various events Boris Johnson rode a bike that was slightly too big for him around a temporary track on the concrete floor of what will soon be the new velodrome. He was joined by Chris Hoy to formally be the first bikes ridden in the building (unless anyone’s sneakily come to work on a bike beforehand).

Boris and Chris haven’t been the only couple to be photographed on bikes. You’d be amazed at how much publicity someone catching Katy Perry and Russell Brand on bikes in New York has generated. You’d have thought they were riding in elephant costumes and handing out free drugs from the number of places that have picked the story up. Still it’s good to see that bicycles can hit the popular press as well as just being discussed in the more highbrow newspapers.

Talking of which;

Someone in the Guardian got terribly upset by the Barclays branding of the Cycle Superhighways and the Bike Hire Scheme, which seems to avoid the point of the money that’s making sure the scheme actually happens, for the sake of a bit of branding, that seems a worthy trade.

Finally for this mid week round up if you, like us, have been interested in the economy of Fort William since the World Cup’s visit there this summer then this article gives an useful window into the changes and the benefits that it’s role as the “Outdoor Capital of the UK” has generated.
