Victories and Advances

With the possible exception of my ability to convert CET to BST this weekend of cycle sport was a pretty decent success. You don’t need me to tell you that Mark Cavendish launched himself to the stage win on the Champs Elysee with speed which was only totally clear in the side shot which showed him passing two of the other sprinters in the Tour, both in full flow, as if they were standing still. He failed to get the green jersey but had clearly regained his confidence with a win even without a final lead-out train from Columbia.

In the mountains of Switzerland British riders were also excelling in the traditionally UK mud and light drizzle conditions at Champery. Gee Atherton took another World Cup win with an awesome run through the sort of mud that would leave most riders stuck solid. It has to be said as well that the conditions brought some particularly spectacular comedy crashes, spinning one rider through an unplanned 360 and leaving another with his peak blocking his vision as crash brought it firmly over the front opening in his full-face helmet.

Fine entertainment all round for fans of lycra-ed skinny wheels riding, “phat” downhilling and cartoon crashing.

In other news my girlfriend was sent an email by David Brown form TfL asking her if she wanted to go on a bike ride with him. On reflection it seems that it actually means that pre-registration for the bike hire scheme had gone live, but avoiding the rush in a relaxed fashion we’ll check that out later in the week.
