Books, Bikes, Beijing and Burglars

Are you getting fed up of more and more technical and ultimately pointless gadgets to attach to your bike? For once FMFT traffic has found a gadget which, although still ultimately pointless, is far less technically advanced than anything we’ve mentioned before. It doesn’t even have anything to link to your iPhone. So, just in case you were wondering where to rest your book as you practice for your commute on rollers in your lounge, Performancebike.com has the answer you’ve always wanted. It’s a lectern for your bicycle. Amazing. You might need to modify it slightly if you wanted to use it for your actual ride to work, and find some very smooth roads. I hate it when my copy of Das Kapital bounces out of my lectern on a speed ramp and gets run under my wheels and into a puddle. I can never find my place again after I’ve circled back to pick it up.

On the subject of Communism I was intrigued to see that one of the cities you think is a centre of popular cycling, Beijing, is finding that the numbers of cyclists is falling dramatically due to traffic congestion and fashion. There are plans afoot to improve the infrastructure including bike lanes and a bike-hire scheme, as reported in the Guardian.

Some places are set up entirely for cycling, however. Including Centre Parcs, where cars are banned and cycling is supposed to provide a break from everyday life. It seems that this has brought its own problem in terms of thefts of bikes form within the Suffolk resort (and I must apologise again for sending you off to the Daily Mail’s website). Admittedly Centre Parcs doesn’t offer anything particularly exciting in terms of cycling, so I was far more excited to come across a huge indoor mountain bike and BMX park in Ohio. Ray’s MTB Indoor Park looks simply brilliant and let’s hope that it’s an idea that catches on somewhere closer. It would be a fantastic way to play on a bike without venturing out into the cold and wet, and without all the layers you can possibly squeeze on under your waterproof.
