Bike fit – August Roundup

As promised, here is the first update on my attempt to turn my commute into a training event. A summary would be that the results have been mixed, at times inexplicable, and that this is going to take a lot longer than a month to pan out.

After setting my initial time of 23:57, the next three rides then posted higher times. That definitely wasn’t the plan. Then, out of nowhere, I posted 21:04, which I was most happy with. Most importantly, I think this exercise is going to make me fitter (and I am having a lot of fun trying to get there) even if the times are all over the place.

I have found that the three largest obstacles to setting a good time are as follows:

i) Being hung over
ii) Forgetting to pump up my tyres
iii) WIND!!!

Of all the above, wind is by far the most annoying and influential. Being hung over is my fault, is preceded by being drunk, which is fun, and only lasts one day. A lack of tyre pressure is easily remedied. But wind is unrelentingly horrible. Flat or downhill sections of my ride that normally flow, a couple of kicks rewarded with a surge of fluid speed, become horrible confidence sapping drudges. The slowest time I have posted so far was on the day the wind was highest. Maybe the quickest time I’ve posted didn’t come out of nowhere after all; it’s just that you don’t notice not being hung over and you don’t notice it not being windy. It’s simply called a nice ride.

Stay tuned for further updates.
