Night-time Excitement

Some days you get a reminder of the importance of doing things right.

One of the last things I did before heading to bed on Wednesday night was to top off my tyres on the commuter bike. Pumping them up to the right pressures seemed like a great plan to set myself up for the next day. I headed off to bed.

Moments after settling into bed I was disturbed by a huge bang. Mindful that in some areas of North London this could be more concerning, I carefully set out to investigate. What I discovered was a burst tyre. The force of the explosion had ripped through the inner tube and tyre casing:

Maybe this is a lesson in not using metal tyre levers as I had on the old rim to get the tyre seated properly, or maybe I’d over inflated the tyre. Most likely it was a bit of both and a spectacular result. Either way I settled in for a midnight refitting of tyres (luckily I had a spare just kicking about) and tubes to get the bike ready for the morning ride.

A bit of drama does add to the fun of cycling, and I’m glad the tyre went this way and not out on the roads.
