A Packed Weekend.

It was a busy weekend in the world of cycling with loads of stories to bring you.

Rachel Atherton won the BT Sport Action Woman of the Year award, thanks to her amazing performance last season (and undoubtedly some serious cycling block-voting) which is more than well deserved as she, for me, epitomises top level athletics both in terms of performance and allowing her riding to talk for her while other female athletes suffer from a continued focus on their appearance in some arenas. I suppose a sport where she competes in a full-face helmet and padding has advantages in that way over a track athlete for example, but I love the attitude that comes through from one of the best UK cyclists that we have, regardless of her gender.

The win has meant more mainstream media coverage, for example from the Independent, and that's also good both for mountain biking and for women in sport.

Down Under the Tour finished in a blaze on Australia Day with a stage win for Greipel and an overall win for Simon Gerrans as Sky riders Thomas and Porte held on to top 10 positions. The season is underway and most other races are easier to keep track of with time differences from here.

While that was going on, Chris Froome demonstrated the danger of the new Rapha summer tops and skinsuits that Sky will be using in hot weather.

At the other end of the weather scale there must be people for whom a fat-bike is just not quite enough for snow riding. At last, for them, there is a modification they can fit to see off even the worst of snow. Why let anything stop you getting out on a bike? (He writes, while sheltering inside all day from the rain.)

Perhaps this, and an unexpected melt, is an explanation for this story. Although I think it's more likely the bikes have been thrown there as the piece suggests. There was more bad news to be rounded up, illustrated by this man who wins my prize for “grumpiest face by a broken-into shed”.

Finally for a packed start to the week I'm sure I'm late with this video, but I only found it on Saturday night:
