Launching the Tour

Cycling news yesterday was dominated by the announcement of the 2014 route for the Tour de France.

As I’m sure you’re aware it will start in Leeds, with two stages in Yorkshire and then a transfer to Cambridge for a stage to finish in central London before the race hits French soil.

So there will be cobbles as the race heads across North West France in memory of the Second World War, which defending champion, Chris Froome, is not especially happy about. He is arguably happier about the climbing nature of the Tour from there as it includes summit finishes all over the shop including a climb to La Planche des Belles Filles, where he scored his first stage win ahead of 2012’s winner and his team mate, Bradley Wiggins. Otherwise it’s a race that will culminate in the Pyrenees and only offers up one time trial. If he can overcome his fears of the cobbles then it’s certainly one for a rider like Froome, and less one for the measured pace of Wiggins. I guess the countdown to the race, and to who will be there to contest it, probably starts now.

While the Yorkshire and London stages won’t decide the race they will offer a spectacle for British fans and there are plans to introduce new signs to allow riders to follow in the wheeltracks of their heroes for long after the race has finished.
