Calling Millar Time

While I was messing around riding near Bracknell and definitely not thinking about Strava at all there were some serious athletes also riding in the Leadville 100. This is the sort of race that makes us mere mortals feel highly inadequate as a bunch of mountain bikers and runners show us all up in an ultra-marathon in Colorado. Strava profiles some of the athletes involved.. If you, like me are at all likely to compare your performance to anyone else, then I suggest not looking at their performances!

Talking of great athletes, there was news last week that Dave Millar will be retiring from the professional road peloton at the end of the 2014 season. Millar is a rider who has earned respect the hard way as a reformed doper and then anti-doping campaigner. His results have been solid as a time trial specialist and super domestique as well as a rider with the nous and power to win stages of the biggest races in the world. He's possibly the last rider that people will remember from that time before Britain was a world force in cycling, and you were following his individual progress through the Tour de France, just hoping for a British finisher, rather than ever imagining a winner. He always seems a likeable guy and I imagine a figure who will be missed from the racing scene.

Want some more Himalayan action? Got it for you.
