Falling Behind in the Mountains.

The Giro went into the mountains proper yesterday and we discovered that Wiggins can actually ride downhill in the dry, although he isn’t climbing as well as his major rivals for the GC, including Nibali and Evans who look strong, and his own team mate, Uran, who rode away from the elite group to win the stage, in the process leapfrogging Wiggins in the GC.

It’s probably fair to say that Wiggins is unlikely to win the race now, sitting over two minutes off the lead and behind his own team mate who looks stronger and more explosive and will surely be supported to try to improve his position. The defending champion Hesjedal also ceased to be even a minor threat as he lost yet more time. Wiggins best chance would seem to be to limit his losses and look to the last time trial in the final days, but if he continues to lose 30 seconds a stage this would seem to be an impossible hope.

Away from that slightly sombre summing up, let’s see if we can’t cheer you up with some films.

There’s more from Danny MacAskill’s mind:

Also we must be getting close to the downhill season proper as the first episodes from riders’ webisodes are “dropping”. Here’s Steve Peat’s:

There's more BMX Supercross action, as Shanaze Reade shows she can win away as well as at home:

Finally, because we can’t totally ignore the Giro, here’s a look at how the cars work (in the context of the race, not in general – that’s something to do with controlled explosions, gears and magic).
