Cycling Goods

Here we are then, in an oddly quiet week for cycling. As time drifts towards three or four in the afternoon I’ll have to find something else to do rather than updating the “live” page for whichever stage race is going on to see who’s won. It also means a bit of a gap in my evenings at around 7pm, which has traditionally become "cycling highlights time" in FMFT towers.

This does give me the chance to bring up some cycling products with fewer names to remember and results to get right.

I have a weird aversion to too many safety features being built in to cycling. With a feeling like having emergency kit just makes it more likely that you’ll need to use it (I am aware of the flaw in this). The sensible side of me (the side that is, like, an actual grown up) knows that this little gizmo, that will sense an accident and call an emergency contact if you aren’t conscious to cancel it, is a great idea. It makes me feel quite reckless riding with only a phone.

Not really a product, and well overdue, I finally got the chance to read the book of the blog from Bikesnob NYC. As expected it was excellent, although perhaps a little less new if you’ve read the blog regularly. It also contains some Americanisms, which is irritating, but forgivable as he is in fact American. Otherwise it’s the sort of book you should make your non-cycling, cynical friends read.

Talking of Bikesnob, he also writes for Bicycling magazine, and I read an issue of that too recently. It's really a road cycling magazine, so not my usual style, but had an interesting view on the whole Lance affair (essentially we should just draw a line under that period and move on) from the editor.
