Track Time

The Olympic action switched to the track yesterday with dramatic team sprint racing.

The drama was started early with a disqualification, for an illegal change over, of Vicky Pendleton and Jess Varnish. Pendleton was in her last Olympics and so the DQ was upsetting, but possibly more so for Varnish who won’t be competing in any other events. Pendleton will race the Keirin tomorrow.

British honour was restored in the men’s event where Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes powered to a win over the French. Hoy has now matched Steve Redgrave’s record of five Olympic golds and has the chance for more to come this year.

In other Olympic-related news a man was tragically killed near the park when he was hit, while cycling, by a bus. This led to the inevitable questions to recently crowned Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins. Then there was a bit of a hoo hah over whether he’d meant that all cyclists should be made to wear helmets which kind of distracted from the tragedy, which I imagine was not the aim.

Too much Olympics? Have some carnage from Megavalanche:
