Pro Racing

Well that was another big weekend for professional cycling around the world.

In the States the town of Windham hosted the Mountain Bike World Cup which saw some exciting racing in the cross country, including the heartbreak of a puncture sending Georgia Gould from a certain win to a tragic third place behind two of her Luna team mates in the last 100-odd metres of the race.

The men’s race was a catalogue of mechanicals including a pedal coming off, the heat making a huge impact and the world champion going AWOL mid-race. Check it out again at Redbull.tv.

Sunday was the turn of the downhillers. In the women's race Rachel Atherton took another win, with a slight question over her leaving the course after holding together a potential crash that lost her two seconds, and with issues on the last jump leaving Tracey Hannah finishing in second without a saddle, and Ragot crashing and crossing the line for third pushing her bike. In the men's event there was no real as surprise Aaron Gwin won again on home turf, with Brits Atherton and Hart in third and forth.

Also, and not to be outdone, by the off-road riders, the road pros were rolling out in Belgium for the Tour de France. Saturday’s prologue saw a positive start by Bradley Wiggins, coming second to a power-house ride by Cancellara. The first stage on Sunday had the riders on an undulating road route which resulted in Cancellara defending his jersey in a brave attack even if he lost to Sagan on the line, and Wiggins staying in touch and ahead of Evans to keep his GC campaign alive.

If that wasn’t enough Tour de France news, Armstrong was officially charged by USADA..
