The 1x9 Experiment

For a while now I’ve been thinking about a change and finally I took the plunge and converted the mountain bike to a 1x9 gear set-up.

The spur to action was in changing over both brakes after finding my back one jammed and doggedly refusing to retract and reset. While working on the bike I thought I should go ahead and do more work. So with both brakes off ready for new ones I went on and started taking more bits off.

I’d decided, as a test, to complete the conversion by breaking down the crankset, rather than buying new parts at this stage.

Going to a single chainring meant no more need for the front mech and shifter, which was no bad thing, as the deraillier has been jammed for a few years and I’ve not actually ridden anywhere on anything other than the middle ring during that time (which may have heavily influenced my decision to take the 1x9 route), therefore the shifter, cable and mech came off first, with the chain broken.

Removing the crankset came next, followed by the bolts and the inner chainring. Ideally the outer ring was gong to follow but the length of the holding bolts meant it had to stay for now as something of a bash-ring. Should the experiment with riding with these gears go well I may invest in a proper bash ring to tidy up the look of the whole thing and possibly hold the chain in place. Otherwise I might just plump for shorter bolts to hold it all together.

With new brakes fitted all round as well I’m looking forward to trying out a new, and strangely fashionable, set-up.

I’ll let you know how it goes.
