Cycle Safe

Last week saw the culmination of the Times #cyclesafe campaign with a parliamentary committee meeting, that you can read all about in BikeBiz’s coverage.

In addition a bus driver in Bristol got rightly jailed for using his vehicle to attack a cyclist. It was all caught on video:

All of this is quite timely as a reminded to al the hordes of new cyclists on the roads as the weather improves. As I ride in the roads have suddenly been full of people on bikes who are less confident than those who’ve been ploughing on through the winter. Here are my top 5 tips for people getting back on the bike:

1. Ride confidently and assertively, while remaining courteous to other road users. Wobbling along in the gutter isn’t cool.

2. Be aware. Keep looking round and use all your senses to know what’s happening around you. Look round before you pull out. Make eye contact with drivers and they’ll know you’re there.

3. Learn where the busses on your route go, this can save you getting trapped inside a bus turning left. Be extra aware of lorries because they won’t have a fixed route.

4. When you arrive, use any bike racks correctly – leaving your bike out blocking a way through just because you can’t be bothered to lift it into the rack doesn’t make you popular.

5. Obey road laws. Don’t jump red lights, don’t ride on pavements. You might not think you’re a “cyclist” just because you rode your bike to work, but everyone else thinks you are, you’re breaking the law and just fuelling all those comments on the Daily Mail website.
