Having loaded up the car with bikes and mothers to go for a day on the Quantocks, I was quite excited to get back to an area I have ridden in the past and was keen to hit again. Riding out of the car park I was enjoying the ridge-riding with views across Somerset and trying to ignore what felt like a jumping drive chain.
Unfortunately it wasn’t a skipping chain, but a free-wheel on the way out. Ten minutes later it went entirely, leaving my pedals spinning and not turning the wheel at all.
I hit several points of my legs as this happened in the mud, so was annoyed and in a bit of pain. In an attempt to bodge a fix that would let me ride on as a fixie, or at least get me back to the car, but this:
Really does not work and resulted in four broken zip ties littering the hill.
Walking back to the car, past all the other mountain bikers heading out to get muddy and having fun, was a little depressing. Still, it gave me a chance to try out the helmet carrier on my new rucksack, I suppose.
So, no ride, and a broken bike. Not a good start to the in-between week of the end of December. Fixing it would be another long saga.
