Electric Revolution

Recently in my usual trawl of the internet for something to tell you about I was more than shocked to see that apparently 1 in 5 bikes sold in Holland are electrically assisted.

Somehow this seems like the beginning of the end of something. Possibly the most casual -cycling-est nation in the world is moving slowly away from natural-powered cycling to having an engine to help them all along. Admittedly this might help people with their overloaded cargo bikes, but famously there aren’t really any hills in The Netherlands to have to struggle up with them.

What will happen when this trend spreads to hillier nations? Will this mean that the much-touted cycling revolution will in the end be an electric bike revolution, and those of us still sticking to push-bikes will become an odd anomaly again?
