Revelations and Recovery

This week has been pretty big for the personalities of cycling.

Cycling legend Graeme Obree come out to the world at large as gay, in an interview with the Scottish Sun. He has also said that struggles with his sexuality contributed to his suicide attempts earlier in his life, making it a personal and deep insight into a man who is probably still often disappointingly just known as the guy who turned a washing machine into a record-breaking bike.

Perhaps even more dramatically, Atherton Racing have announced that Dan Atherton will return to World Cup competition at the Fort William round this year. After an injury like the one he suffered in the summer it’s pretty incredible to think he’ll not just be back on a bike, but competing at the highest level of the sport. I imagine we can expect emotional scenes at Fort William, always a favourite for UK riders anyway, if he achieves this goal. Bearing in mind the recovery he’s managed so far I think it’s safe to say he’ll undoubtedly be there. He has also given an interview to Vital MTB about his recovery which gives an insight to his mindset and strength.
