The Fuel of Champions

In case you’ve missed it recently, and it’s hard to see how you could have, that Victoria Pendleton’s been all over the telly again in the latest advert for Hovis bread.

The advert obviously has its good points, it’s always good to see bikes and cycling on TV and Pendleton is hardly an effort to look at. While I think there should be more of her on the bike and less in the kitchen that’s probably just me, but I do keep thinking every time I see the ad that it’s not telling the whole story.

I mean, yeah I’m sure it’s good to eat bread in the morning (if you can’t get the popular cereals that Pendleton’s GB team mate Chris Hoy prefers) but I really don’t think that that’s the whole story with her diet. Somehow I have sneaking suspicion that in addition to the healthy diet that she undoubtedly eats there might well be a fair amount of sports supplements that might go some way to help her achieve the huge energy output and constant training that becoming a World Champion. Not, you understand that I’m a sports nutritionist or anything.

Perhaps I’m wrong and a couple of slices of toast and a banana are all you actually need to power a morning of high level athletics.
