As ever at FMFT we like to eventually get to the current events in cycling and bring you up-to-the-minute opinions of things that have happened a while ago. In this way we are only a little bit behind and bring you our review of Follow Me, the latest offering from Anthill Films.
The premise behind the film is that pro downhill riders take a friend along their favourite trails, showing them new lines and new thrills. It’s pretty like showing someone that bit of trail you know well and introducing them to the lines you love to ride, except in this case you and your friend are on the international race circuit and that bit of trail is some of the best and most challenging riding in the world.
What you end up with is a superb mix of fabulous riding from the best in the world, including Cam McCaul, Gee Atherton and Sam Hill with insanely fast and accurately smooth downhill with a very nice line in moto-style whips and moments you want to watch again to check that what you thought you saw actually did happen. FMFT hightlights are hard to pin down, but would almost certainly include Sam Hill riding slippery and wet rocks like they’re dry tarmac, and Gee Atherton riding some awesome trails above Queensland. Controversially as well, the behind the scenes footage was almost as interesting as the film itself. The insight to how the film was shot as well as the athletes’ comments and obvious enthusiasm for the riding they’re doing make you feel like you are part of the action. If this film doesn’t make you jealous of the life of a pro downhiller, with their riding, surfing, and hanging out, then I have no idea what would. If you’re someone who already thinks that going around the world just riding bikes is a job you wish you could have, then you will probably love Follow Me. If you don’t already feel like that then perhaps you’re reading the wrong blog anyway.
