It turns out that Rob Lee suffered the curse of us recommending them and unfortunately failed to complete his off-road end-to-end. He was plagued by injury and eventually stopped after just over 600 miles.
Now, this seems like a petty good achievement although obviously it’s only ever going to be set against the target and seem like its fallen short. What seems more sensible is to keep your targets lower, as in the case of Nick Craig (well known by readers of MBUK of a particular age) who managed to successfully complete an end-to-end of the Isle of Man. By setting his sights on a far smaller island the chances of missing the target was reduced hugely. At FMFT we’re all for the sense of achievement from minor challenges, rather than aiming too far. What we’d like is a clear run of the secret singletrack, and the renaming of “dead cat corner”.
On the subject of riding long distances around islands, the Tour of Britain continues today. The stage tomorrow is from Tavistock to Glastonbury, and the Tour website optimistically claims that its visit there is on a fame level with the Tor and the Festival. Personally I think there’s a way to go before a bike race will manage that amount of celebrity in Britain, but it usefully fits into today’s theme of aiming high.
