Still Slippery Out There

Even with the snow and ice having gone for now it seems the streets are still treacherous.

The combination of damp dirty roads, with mud and sludge left over form the bad weather nicely marinated in the kind of moist fog that makes things wet and lubricated, and tyres that have suffered with the same conditions, has created patches on the roads that have rather less grip than you expect. Turning right yesterday across a less used centre section of the road I found one of those patches and my front wheel stopped gripping altogether, dropping me on the tarmac for yet another occasion this winter.

This brings my current total to one big fall with fairly hefty damage to me and my clothes, two or three minor falls on ice with minor scratches to new shoes and a crash on a seemingly clear road and a road-rashed leg. I’m not all that impressed with myself. I’d also had a debate with another cyclist earlier on the same road and I’m pretty sure he saw me fall off, which can’t have improved my argument.

At the same time it seems that cycling is getting safer in London according to the Evening Standard, with more awareness being achieved both from cyclists and HGV drivers. This is, of course, as long as you’re not making a habit of just falling off for very little reason every other week.
