So it seems it did snow a little bit and the internet was quickly covered in a drift of articles explaining how to ride in the white stuff. Lovely stuff and very useful. FMFT’s advice is simple and concise:
1. Stay in a straight line as much as possible.
2. Don’t fall off. (I've failed at this one)
Oh and possibly sit down so that the back wheel keeps traction on slippery bits.
Many of the suggestions kicking around included using it as an opportunity to drag the mountain bike out for some action as it’ll hopefully have knobbly tyres on it and you’ll breeze along. Here at FMFT we are aware that you might not have a mountain bike as well as your commuting bike so we’ve scoured the web to find conclusive consumer advice and the pinnacle of retail journalism. And we thought we’d found it courtesy of Magestic51 magazine which seemed trustworthy and authoritative on its review of Trek mountain bikes. Amazingly it seems to have disappeared, taking with it the descriptions of the “ancient brand of mount bikes”. I guess you’ll have to search elsewhere for your buying advice. (If you really are looking we’d suggest BikeRadar as a starting point).
Tyre choice is key, and perhaps the answer comes from the Inventnow website with tyres that will stick to the smoothest of surfaces. When the streets of London turn to ice these tyres will make riding home a breeze. In fact you could even take a shortcut over the glass-fronted buildings of the city.
