(Not Christmas) Shopping

It seems that there might be good news for anyone living in parts of North London as a new bike shop is rumoured to be opening in Crouch End, so you’ll be able to pick up a bike or some kit along with your organic baby toys in one shopping trip. This is especially good news in light of our experiences with other un-named bike shops in the area.

Incidentally, on that note, I once went in to the shop in question for a quick quote on some work and a chat about it, and was given some very helpful information. Yeah, they could order in a cheap singlespeed crankset, and yeah they could fit it whenever I wanted. I considered the details, decided to go for it, and to prep the bike myself. Unfortunately the crank bolts were stuck fairly tight so I elected to take it over and drop it off. However when I got there I was told that there was no way they could fit the bike in without an appointment several weeks in advance, this might have been my fault and I might have misunderstood originally, although it turned out to be lucky that there was a problem. Another quick chat and the price had rocketed to mean they could only order a Truvitiv crankset in, and then that would have meant a new bottom bracket and more labour charges, despite my questions about the original quote I’d had.

Annoyed and a bit frustrated I took the bike home and the anger gave me the strength to shift the bolts. I proceeded to do the whole job myself and I’m very happy I did.

Evans are, obviously, a big chain bike shop and not the small local family run business that everyone wants to support, but at least the only moan I’ve had with them recently was about gloves and they couldn’t be blamed and were excellent in sorting it out.

Call me a cynical supporter of big business (and I like Tescos as well) but I’m looking forward to it, not least because it means the Hogs Head won’t be coming back.
