One part of FMFT has been on holiday, visiting family in Sri Lanka. A lovely time was had. This being FMFT, the holiday would not be complete without a quick rundown of cycling, Sri Lankan style.
I’m happy to inform readers that FMFT will not be indulging in the oh-so-British tradition of visiting a country and then slagging it off. A prime example is often “the roads in X are awful, they all drive like lunatics”. Other examples that spring to mind are:
- Going somewhere hot and then complaining that it was hot
- Insisting that one must strap one’s money to one’s body with an elaborate set of zips and straps to avoid theft by thieving locals (the stupid thing costs £7.99, you’ve been robbed before you even left the country)
- Complaining about not being able to find a full English with milky tea.
My experience of the roads in Sri Lanka, and specifically in the capital Colombo, is that the local drivers don’t care much for lanes. To counter this, people drive much slower than in the UK, so everyone can change lanes as much as they want without too much risk of a collision. Viewed from a tuk tuk , it ends up resembling a game of ice hockey without the fights. For the cyclist this means you can get by as long as you keep your wits about you. A lot like London then.
The bikes mostly look like this:
I chose this photo because there’s a bird sitting on the bike, which I thought was a nice touch.
On that not-particularly-Christmassy note, we would like to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We’re going to take a little holiday until 4th January (unless anything we just can't avoid posting about happens), but look forward to bringing you more bike related ponderings soon.
