Exits and A Sprint

Hands up all those people surprised to not see Talansky on the start-line of yesterday’s stage?

Apparently succumbing to his cumulative injuries from the first week and an upper respiratory infection he pulled out and went home. This makes yet another team leader out of the race, making those numbers ending in a 1 the most likely to abandon in the competition.

Also leaving the sport in a way, and also perhaps unsurprising, was Jon Tiernan Locke, who was ruled to have violated the UCI’s doping rules and was banned for two years and fired instantly by Sky.

Yesterday’s stage was a rolling day and one for those big day sprinters. A went, as ever, with Simon Clarke the most aggressive through the day until he had nothing left at all and, to the frustration of the Europcar rider working with him, the pack came through hard to swallow them up. This pack included all the main GC challengers as well as big sprint riders, including Degenkolb, Sagan, and Greipel. The German sprinter crashed just outside 3km to go and took himself out of the mix and blaming Chavanel loudly for the fall, while Cannondale got on the front to drive to the end in an effort to finally give Sagan a win.

The lead out started with the powerhouse of Tony Martin on the front as the sprinters wound up. Alexander Kristoff took the win on the line just ahead of Sagan yet again.

The only change in the overall standings was Gallopin dropping out his 5th position. Everyone else stayed put ready for today’s proper mountains.
