In addition Luke Rowe is unlikely to be there as he’s riding his first Grand Tour in the shape of the Vuelta, and I guess it’s most likely that he won’t follow that up with the British race. He will be joined on the Spanish Tour by OPQS rider Andy Fenn, who will also be a Brit riding one of the sport’s biggest races for the first time.
To add to this, the rider I thought most likely to return to the Tour of Britain, as defending champion, Jon Tiernan-Locke, also won’t be riding as it has never been on his schedule and he’s working hard to consolidate a below-par first season at Sky.
All of this means there are some from my list still not committed elsewhere, and perhaps we will see Wiggins in the race in September. Perhaps we’ll also see Cavendish, as he doesn’t appear in OPQS’s Vuelta team.
If Wiggins does turn up then this will probably be good news for the makers and sellers of his replica kit, which links me nicely into this piece from the Guardian about whether anyone should wear jerseys that they arguably haven’t earned. I am firmly of the opinion that the answer is that if you’ve won the jersey you can wear it, but if not then wear something else.
It’s another long weekend here, this time with a bank holiday involved and the hope of more riding, but not anywhere too crowded so I’ll leave you with the last parts of the Bike Park Wales films:
