More Sprint Action

Another flat stage and another chance for Cav to rack up his Tour stage wins tally to 25 was the way yesterday looked.

In many ways it went to plan and made writing anything interesting a little tricky. A break went out, gained a significant lead and then was dragged back in at the perfect time to set up a sprint for the line.

This time a crash in the last couple of corners heavily involved Lotto-Belisol and seemed to take Greipel out of contention leaving the trains of OPQS and Argos Shimano to fight it out for position. Cav burst out first and looked to have it in the last 150 metres. However he hadn’t banked on Kittel latching onto his wheel and coming round him in a dramatic final to beat him on the line in a photo finish.

Cavendish has spoken before of his respect for Kittel as a huge sprinting talent and it seems that he really is coming to the fore.

It will certainly make the Champs Elysee an interesting race at the end of the Tour. Could it be the first time since he’s contested it that the Manx Missile gets beaten there? This time there was a decent lead-out and only the corners made the finish less than perfect.

This year has certainly developed into an interesting and more engaging (if not more frustrating) race than last year’s.

Froome was shepherded to the front and stayed safe in the crash, but looked to potentially have lost another team mate as Boasson Hagen went down and is now out with a broken shoulder. Elsewhere the Dutch throwing of toys continued as Cavendish was uninvited to a race over the crash earlier in the week.

The weekend beckons and then we're into the final week.
