However, I went back.
This time, as you can see I managed to not get lost, find the tracks I wanted and fit it together, including what was billed as the best downhill in the Cotswolds:
So, was it worth it? What did I miss last time?
Well, I still maintain that the directions in the book I was using are inadequate. Bridleways in that area are not well enough signposted at times, making it not clear where to turn, or if what’s being referred to is the right one. I also think it’s important to include where not to go at times where there might be some confusion, or just to make tricky junctions clearer.
The bit I missed last time was, however, excellent. The downhill is singletrack, technical, with multiple choices and steep enough to make you stick the saddle in your chest. In fact the downhill beat me at one point, depositing me over the bars into a soft bank (wrecking the granola bar in my bag) with the bike on top of me. I want to go back and do it again now I know how worthwhile it is.
The rest of the ride was made “interesting” by low hanging bushes to duck under while riding ruts, and so many bugs brushed off them that my eyes seemed under constant attack from tiny insects trying to commit suicide. Fun and fast and worth adding to the list if I’m around that way.
In other news, CG has a film of what Fort William looked like for him.
