World View

I’m back. Having spent a few days in one of those cities where bikes seem to be a part of everyday life, where they are left virtually unlocked on the streets, every pavement has a bike lane, families ride to school together, and you wonder just why they really need a Critical Mass, I’m back in London.

The weird thing is that bikes don’t seem to be as fashion led in a city like Hamburg. I saw maybe one or two fixed gear style bikes in amongst the battered city bikes build for practical pottering and arriving at work non-sweaty. It’s a less aggressive cycling scene and somehow therefore more accepted.

Anyway on my return I saw this story of the development of women’s cycling in Afghanistan and thought it was something well worth sharing. With the way we see bikes in the UK, and perhaps in Western Europe as a whole, it’s easy to forget the huge emancipating power of them.

Then, after a quick commercial break (which I couldn’t resist, but someone should surely be paying me for)..

it’s time for that new Danny MacAskill film which looks behind the scenes at his films and life:
