Both Sides of the Wheel

Some days manage to be both good and bad for cycling.

So on the way home from work I had to deal with a lady in a Clio who was so annoyed I’d slipped past her in traffic that she violently overtook, then clearly lost sight of me before the roundabout and stopped dead, before turning left while I waited and stopping again in the middle of the road to shout at me. Speeding off again she soon got caught in traffic and I passed again as she left the car in the middle of the road to have a shouting match with the white van driver behind her.

Joking aside it leaves a bad feeling as you really don’t know what the car then chasing you down is going to do. A tonne of metal can do quite a lot of damage to someone on a bike.

Moments later I turned right on a mini roundabout and had to deal with a Corsa driver just deciding to ignore that I was there and driving straight on. The driver paused to look at me as I braked to miss the car appearing form my left, then she just carried on as if I wasn’t there. Hopefully she could lip read as my stare, and gesture when I caught her again summed up my feelings.

However, I arrived home to the latest copy of Privateer, which looks to be a delight of quality mountain bike journalism, complete with a long feature on maps, and it became a good bike day.

In other news there is due to be a massive investment in London cycling with more dedicated routes and protected infrastructure. Clearly this is excellent news and might mean some protection from the kind of driver I encountered last night.

To see you on your way today how about the best GoPro crash compliation I can remember:
