In addition to my brake block fun over Christmas, I also got a new rear mech for the mountain bike. This brings the 1x9 set up to more of a XT mix, which I think suits it best. Not too flashy, but solid and reliable. However I would be entirely lying if I said I enjoyed indexing a new derailleur. I always get frustrated with trying to get it just right and failing when I would probably do better by learning to do it properly. Still, it’s on and good enough to ride and I’ll see how it goes when I get on the trails. I mean there’s no point having a perfectly set-up drivetrain when it’ll just get clogged with mud and shift badly anyway.
Who needs perfect precision when the riding should be all about playing and thrashing, not fettling in a workshop (or lounge).
All of this mechanical fun meant I got little riding on the break. It’s hard to remember how much you miss it until you get to ride again. Even a short blast to work and back (the “four miles” the blog’s named after) is enough to make you smile. Just riding a single geared bike on the roads is better then no riding.at all, although it makes me want to hit the dirt again as soon as possible.
