As far as I can see there were two big news stories around yesterday in the cycling world.
The story about a guy who’d ridden his bike all 10000 miles across the Far East, only to have it stolen by a 13 year old and his Mum in Bristol was pretty big but most press focussed on the GB Olympic Cycling Squad selection.
To be honest much of the selected squad is not a great surprise, with a bucket load of former and current champions and medal winners. I guess the obvious stand-out interesting picks are Dave Millar (expected, but still a potentially controversial pick after a previous drug-ban) and newcomer, Philip Hindes.
To be honest, I think Millar has worked hard to rebuild his reputation, and, although I find it hard to feel comfortable about drug-cheats in sport at all, given the rules as they are he does offer a solid support to what will inevitably be a team working to drive Cavendish to the line.
With that and Wiggins’ chances in the Tour de France growing with each bit of news, it could be a great summer for British cycling. Let’s not shout too loudly and hope the confidence doesn’t jinx anything…
