Motorway Riding

The M4 is, for me (and I’m sure many people living in London) the escape route and the pathway to mountain biking fun.

Usually I drive on along it heading for the places I know in the south west or in Wales. This weekend I had some time to kill before I was expected at a friend’s house to watch the Friday night football and so took a chance on a quick detour and an explore, with the help of one of my favourite route guides, around the countryside off the motorway.

Surprisingly, to me at least, there was some decent riding to be had. Not too dramatic or extreme, but nice countryside riding with some thrills and fast long downhills where the wet clay made as much of a challenge as big rocks and drops.

The ride I did was around Aldbourne where you can start on the village green, next to the pretty church and round the corner from the thatched bus stop, and then strike out into farmland and towns, with pubs, stud farms and llamas scattered along the way between the sunken lanes and fast tracks.

My advice is, once in a while, nip off the motorway and see what’s there. You might be surprised.
