Locks and Robbers

Once in a while a story about bikes seems to be used as a cover for something else entirely. For and extreme example how about this story of a guy in America who is using the theft of his bike to justify his deep seated racism.

In other news, I enjoy a good, bad-locking as much as anyone. Often there’s no way to share it, as, unlike some bloggers, I never seem to have a camera handy. This time I was lucky.

I’d like to draw your attention to the key areas here.
- You might think that the awesome power of parcel tape is enough to stop theft. It’s probably not. Unless the thief just forgot his scissors.
- However there is a secondary defence here as the helmet strap is fastened round the wheel and rack. For a thief with no thumbs to operate the buckle this could be all the deterrent they need. Although you should bear in mind that in an extreme option they could probably undo the quick release without thumbs, and take the bike that way,.
- At least the lock goes round a part of the bike that’s immovable. Oh wait, hang on, no, that’s just the crank that could be rotated out of the way.

Luckily the bike was locked in a downstairs garage so should be safe, but I wouldn’t advise following the parcel-tape method of locking anywhere else.
