Slow GPS

So far bike-mounted GPS and navigation systems have been something of the preserve of people taking the whole thing pretty seriously. It assumes you have no time to stop and look at a map and want to know how fast you’re going and where you are, and possibly also how many more energy gels you’ll need to eat to get up the next hill.

I have never really got excited about them, mainly because I enjoy the thrill of seeing everything ahead of me on a map and envisaging the ride, without being restricted to just what’s happening next, seen on a small screen.

Things look like changing soon as in Japan a new GPS for people who want to potter along is being sold.

I really hope it gives you directions in a relaxed and laid back way, perhaps giving you a run down of the sites and experiences that you might encounter if you were to take each turn. After all you’ll have time to listen, take it in, and make a decision before you get there as you slowly cruise along.
