Cross Discipline Racing

Last weekend was a good one for cycling. Not only did I take on the Doethie valley (with a video to follow to demonstrate the superb riding that’s out there) but also, in another country, history was being made.

In case you have really not been paying attention, Mark Cavendish won the final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs Elysée for a record third consecutive year, but also, in doing that, won the Tour’s green jersey, the first time a Briton has ever won it. While Mark may put all his many victories down to the support and skill of his HTC HighRoad team, one website can’t wait to put it down to his relationship with Peta Todd.

Talking of competition, one man in America tried everything to get away from the police, which resulted in his own personal triathlon. If he was fitted with some all-in-one lycra he could be a real contender, especially considering he was drunk at the time. Imagine the potential if he did it sober.

Also in the States, bikes have been involved in a multi-discipline race which includes flying in hot-air balloons. There is so much to explore outside the traditional events that feature cycling. I, for one, would like to see this expanded into as many areas as possible, preferably to cover as many different events as possible.

Away from competition the trend for city-based bike hire schemes continues as Newcastle has unveiled a lower-tech solution where you send a text to get a code for a combination lock on the bike you want to hire. Hopefully even without the bells and whistles of the London scheme it will work as well.
