Just for the Crack (A terrible joke too late for St Patrick's Day anyway)

“Hi, is that FMFT?”, “yes”, “I’m calling form the (major high-street bike shop) suspension service centre. I’ve stripped down and cleaned your forks, but I can’t service them as there’s a 2” crack in the stanchion. That’s why the oil’s leaking”. “Ah…”

And there in one quick phone call I went form hoping that the forks would be good as new after a quick service, to shopping around for some new ones and wondering whether I was going to be able to go through all the quite scary bits of fitting them.

Suspension forks are not easy to buy, especially as they probably come in as possibly the most expensive single bit of a bike. Hopefully I have managed to cover all the questions of steerer diameter, quick release compatibility, and brake-mount issues, while also managing to get something that’s good value, appropriate and looks ok.

The money’s spent and the forks are on the way so I will undoubtedly report back on my progress. There might also be a review of the forks, where I will attempt to avoid the inevitable comment that anything was going to be better then the broken ones.

For now I’m simply considering that I rode down the rutted and rocky downhill in the Cwm Carn XC route at a reasonable pace with that two-inch crack almost certainly already there in the fork. It’s an interesting thought to say the least.
