In amongst all of the sitting on the sofa that I have done in the last couple of weeks in celebration of Christmas and the New Year it’s always nice to see a bit of cycling on the telly. Unfortunately the best I managed to watch was the terribly exciting “Famous and Fearless” on Channel 4.
The first episode featured the male contestants (a friend of Ewan McGregor, Richard Branson’s son, a rugby legend and a comedian) competing in the extreme sport of BMXing. Except they were riding 24” wheeled cruisers as BMXs were deemed too hard to ride (or perhaps too small for the towering Jonah Lomu) and spend ages training for a quick blast round a lap or two of the arena. Quite frankly I was left with the impression that I could have probably given them all a run for their money, even without the expert guidance of an Olympic development coach.
There was the odd thrill and even a spill but it somehow lacked the excitement that could have come out of the sport. That was left to a BMX and skate team, Team Extreme, to ramp up the thrill level on their, er, ramps after the main event. Still even as they flipped and spun bad camera angles made you feel like you were missing the best tricks.
If you also feel like reliving this slightly underwhelming piece of television the series continues all week and you can watch the BMX episode right here on your computer.
