While it’s not actually icy out on the roads at the moment, it’s still not exactly what you might call grippy. The streets, around here at least, are definitely slimy and treacherous, made all the more risky by them looking, at first glance, to be clear and trustworthy.
I have discovered this with a couple of recent near-misses, where tight turns have become all the more exciting as the back wheel steps out suddenly and disconcertingly. Due to my immense bike handling skills (oh, ok, probably a fair amount of luck) I’ve stayed both on my bike and with everything the right way up wheels and bike-wise. Both incidents have reminded me to take it steady at the moment and to brake gently and make no sudden movements (much like dealing with an aggressive animal).
All this makes me hanker for dry roads and warmth, where the edges of traction are pushed by my skill, not by the rubbish roads. I’m clearly not the only people to feel like this, and at least one group of BMXers have headed (I assume. They might actually live there) to the South of France in order to show off.
