Just when you are in mid flow of a good session of swearing and gesticulating at a white van driver for nearly driving straight into you as you circumnavigate roadworks, the wind can get taken right out of your sails. Having the van overtake you and bracing yourself for the comeback, which could be anything from ignoring you to trying to run you off the road, you realise the driver is apologising to you and you’re suddenly obliged to rethink your opinion of him, and even nod your acknowledgement.
I guess it’s a better way round than the alternative and is a timely reminder that the majority of drivers on the roads of London are not actively trying to kill you, but can occasionally make mistakes. It’s good to be reminded of this once in a while for the sake of your sanity.
At the very least it makes the roads a slightly more friendly place when it’s becoming a bit of a drag home, uphill, against the wind and in the gloom every evening.
