I’m absolutely sure that the one thing that BMX riders feel like they’re missing as they attack the local skatepark or dirt jumps is the opportunity to check their email, watch films, play games and listen to music at the same time. It’s simply not exciting enough to be dropping into a vert ramp or pulling a double tailwhip backflip without some form of on-board entertainment to spice it up a little. Luckily the solution has been developed and there is now a convenient iPad holder that attaches to your handlebars, and also includes a speaker so you can play out your “tunes” to everyone else in the skatepark.
When we asked a little while ago for people to start doing fun and stupid things on Boris Bikes, what we had in mind was some sort of BMX type riding (with or without an attached iPad). What seems to have happened instead is that cyclists cannot resist the lure of riding long distances. An Ad Executive is setting out to ride from Newcastle to London on one of the bikes in order to raise money for breast cancer research. We should wish him good luck as I think the ride is going to be a pretty tough challenge on the heavy bike, I hope the money he raises at least covers the huge hire charge he’s going to be looking at, and that is isn’t pursued the whole way by police from the dedicated central London cycle team trying to get the bike back.
Whether or not he wears a helmet is still up to him, although there is now a campaign going on, led by road safety charity Brake, to try to get helmets included in the bike hire scheme. Apparently there have been a couple of injuries requiring head-scans to people riding the bikes, which has led them to ask for the change, although with the thousands of trips being reported on the bikes, a couple of accidents were probably inevitable and not exactly dramatic when set against the number of incident-free rides being completed. FMFT tends to wear helmets to ride, but think that doing so should definitely be a persona l choice.
