Unmasking, Heros and Other Things.

Firstly some news: We’re entering a bank holiday weekend and as such there will be no new posts on here until Tuesday 6th April as FMFT takes an Easter break. Never fear, we’ll be back refreshed and reinvigorated after the long weekend.

Until then we can bring you more fun from the internet including the news that Islington has been named as the area of London most enthusiastic about cycling in a survey by easyroommate.com. Apparently the borough has a high number of designated cycle storage areas in homes and other factors including the number of bicycle accidents (I’m not entirely sure how a high number of accidents makes it a good place to cycle, or maybe I’m missing the point?). It’d be nice to come across a flat with any actual specific bike storage, but it’s encouraging to know that they do exist somewhere.

Also on the streets of the capital, London Mayor Boris Johnson has been continuing his reign as a one-man avenging force against antisocial behaviour and crime. This time he has chased down a car full of youths to berate them about throwing litter from the car. Admittedly the litter was thrown at his head and many of us would also want to chase down cars in the same way, if only we had the authority of being the Mayor of London.

Perhaps Boris should pop over to Portland in the States to further his power as an avenging force by taking the City’s Police course in using bikes to help crowd control. They sensibly suggest it’s only really appropriate in situations where the crowd is calm, and that horses are better on messier occasions, but Boris might learn some skills to add to his superhero armoury.

Sticking with America, it’s been an interesting week in bike blogging, where the author of one of the most popular and best bike blogs around (obviously behind this one!) has been unmasked. It turns out that BikesnobNYC is in fact a guy called Eben Oliver Weiss, as revealed by the Wall Street Journal. He has a book coming out soon, which will hopefully be as funny and entertaining as the blog he’s written for years.

None of these things have remotely been April Fools, however unlikely some of the news seems. Also not a joke is the possibility that the silent part of FMFT has developed from wanting a Langster to deciding to buy a road-racing bike. It’s a slippery slope, but we shall watch with interest.
