News from America

Los Angeles has not been traditionally a city with a strong bike culture, just the size of the place makes a car a far more sensible option, but that seems to be changing.

Following on from the reports of rising thefts and reprisals in the city it seems that the couriers are continuing to mete out vigilante style justice. The latest report is of a thief being chased down and the stolen bike recovered, which seems to tick all the boxes to become a dramatic crime-fighting story. With fixed wheeled bicycle patrols cruising the streets on the look out for thefts-in-progress and tearing after the perp. They should wear capes.

Luckily the incident didn’t take place in Calgary, where the high speed chase could have been severely restricted by the cycle lane speed limits which the local council have voted to keep. Mind you, I’d like to think the thief and the vigilante couriers might have still managed a bit of speed. Either that, or an amusing low-speed chase.

They also might have run into trouble in Fairfax where another local council spokesman has claimed that bicycles aren’t transportation devices. I think the couriers might have had some words about that, and perhaps not had the time to create their vigilante bands.

It seems that there are some good things going on involving bikes in LA after all that. As long as you think that it’s a good thing to play music using only a group of bicycles.
