While we’ve been gone there have been a number of things we just couldn’t ignore. Firstly there’s been an interesting report in the Oxford Mail about reduced speed limits and their effect on motorists and cyclists. Ben Thomas on the Guardian Bike blog gets his comments bang on in my opinion, and as more and more streets in London look to be restricted to 20mph, it’s certainly interesting to see what will happen to cyclists who can now reach the speed limit. On my ride I go along a number of streets with a 20mph limit and I’m sure that I come close to the limit (as I showed when I raced the bus), although this never seems to reduce the number of cars that want to overtake, taking them well over the speed limit. I guess the popular perception is that bikes must be slower than cars and should be overtaken, but this simply isn’t true in large cities like London.
In Liverpool, however, there is good news with the introduction of Bishops on Bikes. Who knows, maybe a religious outfit is the best way to not get overtaken or knocked off on the roads of the city. I’m off out to buy myself a dogcollar (I’ve Googled it and Soho seems to be the place…) to make me safer.
Finally, to prove we're not entirely Londoncentric we took great effort to track down a useful website for cycling information in the Bristol area. Our extensive research was, as ever, thorough and far-reaching and absolutely didn't just involve drunkenly photographing an advertising banner in the dark.
The website is Betterbybike.info. We're branching out, see, information on Oxford, Liverpool and Bristol all in one post.
