Today is an exciting day in the life of FMFT. For those of you keeping count (and I’m sure there are many) then you’ll know that this post is officially our 100th.
So we’ll be giving ourselves a polite and muted round of applause, waving to the crowd and then getting on with the job in hand, with a slightly warm glow that we’ve achieved quantity and, occasionally, quality so far.
The big news right now is that the charges for the TfL bike hire scheme have been announced, and they’re pretty good for short journeys. After a £1 access fee the first half hour is free, which actually means you could get some considerable distance. As we’ve demonstrated recently it’s easily possible to average about 12mph cycling in London, which means a good six miles of free cycling either within the cycle hire zone, or 3miles out and back again. By my calculations this could mean you could cover the width of the entire zone without paying more than a Pound to do so. The widest part covers something like Holland Park to Brick Lane in London’s Gritty East End, a distance of only a smidge over 6 miles and therefore within the scope of a quick ride, provided the docking stations turn out to be sensibly located and easy to find. The map of the Cycle Hire Sceme zone is here.
I’m looking forward to finding out exactly where the docking stations are and what possibilities that might open up for impromptu rides around central London.
