After my comments about the Cycle Fridays scheme that was designed to make people ride into work together, I wasn’t entirely surprised to find that it wasn’t exactly deemed an outstanding success, according to the Islington Gazette. It’s something of a shame that more people can’t be encouraged to ride to work, although perhaps there are a number of factors which might have combined to discourage them.
It might have been the idea behind the scheme, taking the freedom of riding to work whenever you want away form using your bike to get there, or it might just have been the distinct lack of good, safe bike paths. The Guardian has some great examples of the worst of these cyclepaths and I can’t quite decide if they make me laugh, or just despair.
Finally, I’d no-sooner written a post about bike parking when I remembered to check out the lamp-post mounted bike lock rings that I mentioned a few weeks ago. They’re called Cyclehoops, and demonstrate a remarkable amount of sense, in finding a simple and intelligent solution to the problem of finding placed to leave a bike. I like how versatile the hoops can be, not needing the council to concrete anything into the pavement, and encouraging existing street furniture to be used in a new way. Their website also has a lot of sensible information about cycling safely. I hope more boroughs start using them.
