As commuters go, I definitely fall into the category of the lazy commuter. If I see an excuse to get off the bike and sit on the tube, I will usually take it, but nearly always end up regretting it.
Take last Wednesday as an example. I somehow managed to convince myself that having a doctors appointment on the way to work was an excuse not to cycle in. At the end of the working day, simply having to walk back up to the tube station and deal with large crowds of people was enough to convince me I’d made a mistake. But, just in case I needed further convincing, I walked on to a packed tube in my standard day dreaming daze to find myself surrounded by five wasted Celtic fans on their way to a game at the Emirates. There was no way I could move and I quickly realised I would much rather be slinking my way through London on my bike. The singing was quite entertaining, but involved a lot of putting their hands up in the air at certain points in the song. Nice touch, but the guy behind me was too drunk to realise that he was twatting me round the head every time they hit the chorus. It was all good natured but, as he got going, he obviously felt I wasn’t getting involved enough, so he put his arm round my neck and started jumping up and down. Politely trying to remove his arm simply led to a tighter grip. Their stop came and they went and as the crowds slowly dissipated at the following stops, I sat down to enjoy my mild concussion.
Next time you think riding in may be a bit of a chore, think again.
